What to Bring to Your First CCW Class

Your Essential Kailua-Kona Range Bag Checklist

What to Bring to a CCW Class in Hawaii

Your Essential Kailua-Kona Range Bag Checklist

The Bottom Line Up Front

To prepare for your Hawaii CCW class, you must bring:

  • Valid ID and your Basic Pistol certificate.
  • Proper attire: closed-toe shoes, a high-neck shirt, and a brimmed hat.
  • Electronic eye and ear protection.
  • Your completely unloaded firearm in a locked case.

Taking the step to get your Hawaii County Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit is a major milestone in your self-defense journey. If you aren't sure how long the administrative side takes, check out our breakdown of the Hawaii CCW timeline.

1. Valid Identification and Paperwork

Before we can hit the range, we have to handle the administrative side.

  • Bring a valid Hawaii State ID or Driver's License.
  • Bring your completion certificate for the NRA-certified Basic Pistol Course, as it is a prerequisite for the Big Island CCW class.

2. The Right Range Attire

Safety starts with what you wear. The Hawaiian sun is warm, but the range requires specific clothing to keep you safe from hot, ejected brass:

  • Closed-toe shoes: Absolutely no slippers or flip-flops on the range.
  • High-neck shirts: A standard crew-neck t-shirt is perfect to prevent hot brass from catching in your shirt; avoid v-necks.
  • A brimmed hat: A standard baseball cap protects your face and eyes from the sun and flying casings.

3. Eye and Ear Protection

Protecting your vision and hearing is non-negotiable. Electronic earmuffs are highly recommended because they block out hazardous gunshot noise while amplifying normal speaking voices, allowing you to clearly hear range commands. If you don't have your own yet, let us know—we always have training gear available for our Kona students.

4. Your Firearm (Or Use Ours!)

If you own the handgun you plan to carry, bring it! Ensure it is completely unloaded and secured in a locked case or range bag before arriving. Keep all live ammunition in a separate container.

Don't have a gun yet? We offer full firearms training with provided equipment in Kona. We will supply the firearms and the gear so you can learn safely and confidently before making a purchase.

5. Hydration and a Learner's Mindset

We are going to be absorbing a lot of information regarding Hawaii's local and federal firearm laws, advanced techniques, and precision shooting drills. Bring a notebook, a pen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated in the Kona heat. Come with an open mind, and our USMC-trained lead instructor will guide you through the rest.
